Marisha Farnsworth is an artist and architect. She creates site works and community projects at the intersection of ecology and technology. Her work ranges in scale—from drawings to large architectural installations—and involves the participation of hundreds of people and multiple species. Each project requires research and collaboration with scientists and citizens, combining quantitative data with personal narrative.

She states “I am from California where climate change is already visible in our forests: millions of trees are standing dead and entire species are disappearing from our region. These transformations have impelled me to choose local wood as a sculptural medium and to explore our historical relationship with our forests through text and drawing. Trees in California have witnessed radical change in the last two hundred years, and these changes can be read in the physical material of my sculptures. My work examines how this ecological chronicle, laid bare by tree rings, maps onto personal histories. I address the relationship between humans and our changing ecological environment not only through my art practice, but also through education and civic engagement.”

Farnsworth has exhibited her work at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and in the Venice Biennale, and she has work in the collection at the Nevada Museum of Art.

Farnsworth was born in San Francisco, California and is based in the Bay Area.
