Tyrell Collins has had a studio practice for over 25 years and was trained as an oil painter. Her recent works are colored pencil drawings on black paper. The drawings are developed through a slow build-up of repeated, layered lines. Collins is as interested in the process of producing the work as in the work itself. She is interested in physics and metaphysics; in waves, particles, matter, light, and space; and the mysteries at the outside edge of these natural phenomena. About her work, Collins states: “The coherence of the lines and the creation of the glow develop so gradually that when they appear I am both surprised and relieved. With each drawing I experience a leap of faith. My greatest aspiration is to produce a visual experience that transcends the visual, lines that create a semi-audible hum, work that evokes a sense of the physical energy of the universe and our experience of it.” Her drawings have been exhibited nationally and won numerous awards. Collins was born in 1948, and lives and works in Oakland, California.
