Shannon Gray
Residency: January 10 - March 4, 2022 (part of the 2021 invited artists group)
Shannon Gray is an aerialist, dancer, and performance artist. Her relationship with dreams, animals, and the unseen world merged with her lifelong passion for movement and creative expression, and in 2007, she discovered aerial dance and performance. The dance trapeze, specifically, became an avenue for Gray to explore concepts such as improvisation, release, and authentic movement.
In 2010, Gray began performing and teaching around the world and working with internationally renowned circus festivals, social circus organizations, and companies, such as Bad Unkl Sista, Capacitor, and Zaccho Dance Theater. In 2016, following a life-altering injury, she created The Sentience Project—an exploration of the embodiment of injury, healing, and sentience.
Gray is in collaboration with artists such as Mia Pixley and Lawrence Martinez. She is a teacher, youth mentor, and advocate for animal rights. The Sentience Project continues to be the container for her art, teaching, and body’s expression.
Gray was born in Montreal, Canada and lives in the oceanside town of Bolinas, north of San Francisco, California.
